TReND in Africa (Teaching and Researching in Natural Sciences for Development in Africa) is a non-for-profit organization whose mission is to achieve sustainable development in Africa through the promotion of scientific research and education.

With the support from the Volkswagen Stiftung, TReND in Africa organized the first Advanced Open Labware Course, which took place in Cape Town, South Africa, during May 2018.

Through a series of workshops using advanced DIY and Open Labware methods, participants from over 8 different countries in Africa and a group from Germany gathered around to design, assemble, and test their own projects: pieces of lab, research, and science equipment. The main goal of this course was to incite cooperation and continuous collaboration.

The photographic documentation of the workshops, as well as video documentaries including interviews and testimonials with the participants, were developed by Super Eclectic.

In Open Labware projects, documentation plays a crucial role: every step of the process must be clear and transparent so they can be easily reproduced by scientific teams in different parts of the world. Scientific patents are the subject of a heated discussion. In low-income countries, Open Source methodologies have proven to be incredibly helpful in developing technology for the greater good of the population.
